The Best Private Jet Airports in Florida
A common assumption when booking a private flight is that the airport decision gets made for you. In reality, for most Florida trips there are two, three, sometimes four legitimate options within reasonable range of your destination, and the one you pick affects your ground time, your costs, your FBO experience, and occasionally your aircraft options. What follows is a practical breakdown of the airports we actually route through at Apex, organized by region, with an honest assessment of what each one is good for and where its limitations are. Lounge aesthetics get a mention only where they actually matter to the decision.
Florida has over 130 public-use airports. A handful of them are great for private aviation.

Tampa Bay
St. Pete-Clearwater International (PIE)
KPIE St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport
PIE is our home base. Over 70% of the traffic here is general aviation, which means the infrastructure, the ramp culture, and the staff are built around private aircraft rather than tacked on as an afterthought to a commercial operation. The two FBOs, Sheltair and Signature, both offer solid lounges, courtesy cars, and quick turnarounds. There's no fighting commercial traffic for ramp space or runway access.
For anyone whose final destination is Clearwater, St. Petersburg, or the beaches along Pinellas County, PIE puts you closer than Tampa International does, and with a fraction of the ground complexity. It's also a strong choice for Sarasota-bound passengers who want to avoid the commercial traffic at SRQ.
- Best for: Clearwater, St. Pete, Pinellas County, Tampa Bay area
- FBOs: Sheltair, Signature Flight Support
- Practical note: Customs available for international arrivals
Tampa International (TPA)
KTPA Tampa International Airport
TPA handles significant commercial traffic, but it maintains a well-run general aviation side. The ramp experience is more managed than PIE, and during peak periods you may encounter delays that simply don't exist at a dedicated GA airport. That said, TPA has advantages: longer runways that accommodate larger heavy jets without restriction, strong FBO options through Signature and Sheltair, and for passengers connecting from TPA to ground transport into downtown Tampa or South Tampa, the location works well.
For heavy jets on transcontinental or international missions, TPA's infrastructure makes it the right call over PIE. For lighter aircraft on regional trips, PIE is typically faster and easier.
- Best for: Downtown Tampa, larger aircraft, international arrivals
- FBOs: Signature Flight Support, Sheltair
- Practical note: Expect more coordination time during commercial peak hours
Sarasota-Bradenton International (SRQ)
KSRQ Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport
SRQ sits three miles from downtown Sarasota and handles a comfortable mix of commercial and general aviation without feeling overwhelmed by either. The FBOs are set apart from the commercial terminal with their own ramp access, and the overall pace is calmer than TPA. For passengers heading to Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, or the barrier islands from Venice up through Anna Maria, SRQ is usually the most practical option.
Worth noting: SRQ has seen increasing traffic in recent years as Sarasota's profile has grown. It remains efficient, but it's no longer the quiet stopover it was a decade ago.
- Best for: Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, southwest Gulf Coast
- FBOs: Signature Flight Support, Sheltair
- Practical note: Good runway length for mid to large cabin jets
South Florida
Opa-locka Executive Airport (OPF)
KOPF Opa-locka Executive Airport
OPF is Miami's busiest dedicated private aviation airport, and it shows. The airport is entirely general aviation, which means no commercial airline interference, no shared terminal congestion, and FBO operators that have built their entire operation around the charter and business aviation market. Multiple full-service FBOs including Atlantic Aviation operate here with 24/7 service, VIP lounges, and concierge capability. Jet Aviation recently launched operations at OPF with a new facility currently under full build-out, adding significant capacity.
For Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, Wynwood, the Design District, or Brickell, OPF puts you closer and with less ground hassle than routing through MIA. During high-profile events like Art Basel or Miami Music Week, the commercial airports become genuinely difficult, and OPF handles the surge far better.
- Best for: Miami Beach, South Beach, Bal Harbour, Design District, Brickell
- FBOs: Atlantic Aviation, Fontainebleau Aviation, Embassair, and others
- Practical note: OPF is the 8th busiest private jet airport in the U.S. by operations
Miami Executive Airport (TMB)
KTMB Miami Executive Airport
Formerly Kendall-Tamiami, TMB serves the southwest Miami-Dade corridor and is the practical choice for passengers heading to Coral Gables, Pinecrest, Coconut Grove, or the Florida Keys. On-site U.S. Customs and Border Protection makes it a viable international arrival point. The International Flight Center unveiled a new FBO terminal in late 2025 with updated lounge space, private rooms, and a conference facility, making it a more competitive option than it was a few years ago.
TMB has minimal congestion by Miami standards, good runway access, and a straightforward operation. For Keys-bound passengers specifically, routing through TMB rather than OPF or MIA cuts meaningful time off the ground portion of the trip.
- Best for: Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Pinecrest, Florida Keys connections
- FBOs: International Flight Center, Reliance Aviation
- Practical note: On-site Customs for international arrivals
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE)
KFXE Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport
FXE is dedicated entirely to general aviation, located in the Uptown Business District about 10 miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale. For passengers heading to Fort Lauderdale's waterfront, Las Olas, or the yachting community along the Intracoastal, FXE is the obvious choice over Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International. Multiple FBOs offer customs services, maintenance facilities, and lounges that are meaningfully more relaxed than anything you'll find at a shared commercial facility.
FXE also serves as a practical alternative entry point for passengers whose ultimate destination is Boca Raton or Palm Beach, when FBO availability or aircraft positioning makes it the better option on a given day.
- Best for: Fort Lauderdale, Las Olas, Boca Raton, Intracoastal destinations
- FBOs: Signature Flight Support, Atlantic Aviation, Banyan Air Service
- Practical note: Customs services on-site for international arrivals
Palm Beach International (PBI)
KPBI Palm Beach International Airport
PBI handles commercial and general aviation, but the FBO is positioned at the southern end of the airport with a separate entrance that creates a clean separation from the commercial terminal experience. The lounges offer direct apron access, which keeps the experience private and efficient. For Palm Beach, West Palm, Boca Raton, and the surrounding barrier islands, PBI is typically the right call.
During winter season, particularly January through April, PBI sees heavy private aviation traffic as the Palm Beach social calendar fills up. Booking FBO ramp space and planning extra lead time during peak weeks is worth doing.
- Best for: Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton
- FBOs: Signature Flight Support, Atlantic Aviation, and others
- Practical note: Plan ahead during winter season for ramp availability
Orlando and Central Florida
Orlando Executive Airport (ORL)
KORL Orlando Executive Airport
ORL sits three miles from downtown Orlando and offers a genuine alternative to the managed chaos of Orlando International. For corporate passengers coming in for meetings in the financial and business district, ORL puts you on the ground close to where you need to be. The airport hosts two FBOs, Atlantic Aviation and Sheltair, and it's large enough to accommodate a wide range of aircraft types while remaining far less congested than MCO.
ORL also regularly hosts major aviation industry events, including NBAA functions, which means the infrastructure gets tested by significant volume and holds up well.
- Best for: Downtown Orlando, business travel, corporate meetings
- FBOs: Atlantic Aviation, Sheltair
- Practical note: Strong choice over MCO for anything other than an international arrival
Kissimmee Gateway Airport (ISM)
KISM Kissimmee Gateway Airport
ISM is worth knowing about if your destination is the Walt Disney World corridor, the theme park area broadly, or Osceola County. It's a quieter general aviation airport south of Orlando that puts leisure travelers close to their destination without any of the MCO experience. The FBO infrastructure is more modest than ORL, but for the right trip and the right aircraft, it's a clean, efficient option.
- Best for: Disney World area, Kissimmee, Osceola County
- FBOs: Sheltair
- Practical note: Best suited for smaller aircraft and straightforward regional trips
Southwest Florida
Naples Municipal Airport (APF)
KAPF Naples Municipal Airport
APF is two miles from downtown Naples, which is about as well-positioned as a Florida airport gets relative to its city center. Naples Jet Center opened a new executive terminal recently, adding lounge space, office facilities for pilots, and a second-floor observation deck. For Southwest Florida generally, and for the Naples-Marco Island-Bonita Springs corridor specifically, APF delivers a quality private aviation experience in a city that attracts high-net-worth travelers year-round.
Runway length at APF limits very large cabin jet operations, so it's worth confirming aircraft compatibility before routing heavy iron through here. Light to midsize jets operate here without issue.
- Best for: Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Springs
- FBOs: Naples Jet Center, Signature Flight Support
- Practical note: Runway limitations for very large cabin jets; confirm aircraft suitability
Page Field (FMY)
KFMY Page Field Fort Myers
Page Field is Fort Myers' dedicated general aviation airport, distinct from Southwest Florida International (RSW) which handles the commercial traffic. For Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel, and Pine Island, FMY puts you significantly closer to your destination than RSW and with a quieter, more manageable ramp experience. The FBOs are well-run and the airport handles the Southwest Florida season traffic without the overcrowding you see at some of the bigger South Florida airports.
- Best for: Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel, Lee County
- FBOs: Signature Flight Support, Page Field Aviation
- Practical note: Strong seasonal choice for Southwest Florida leisure travel
The Keys
Key West International (EYW)
KEYW Key West International Airport
Key West is the southernmost airport in the United States and the only practical air option if Key West is your actual destination. The Signature FBO offers what you'd expect: a lounge, concierge services, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The important operational consideration is runway length. At roughly 4,800 feet, EYW imposes real limitations on aircraft type. Many midsize jets can operate here comfortably, but larger cabin aircraft typically can't, which affects both performance and range calculations.
If you're committed to Key West as a destination, EYW works well for the right aircraft. If you have flexibility on the jet, discuss aircraft selection with your charter operator before assuming your preferred model can make the landing.
- Best for: Key West, Lower Keys
- FBOs: Signature Flight Support
- Practical note: Runway length (~4,800 ft) restricts larger aircraft; confirm compatibility
How to Choose
The airport decision is worth a conversation with your charter operator before it's made for you. A few questions that usually clarify the right choice:
- Where exactly is your ground destination? The closest airport to the airport isn't always the closest airport to where you're actually going.
- What size aircraft are you flying? Runway length, ramp space, and hangar availability all vary meaningfully across Florida airports.
- Are you arriving internationally? Not every Florida airport has on-site Customs and Border Protection. Routing to one that doesn't creates an extra stop.
- What time of year is it? South Florida airports in January through April and the Keys during spring break see significantly heavier private aviation traffic than at other times of year.
- What's your ground transportation plan? Some airports put you five minutes from your hotel. Others require 45 minutes of interstate driving that could have been avoided with a different field.
At Apex, we factor all of this into the routing conversation. The aircraft and the airport should both be working for you, not creating extra steps at either end of the trip.
